Our Natural State of Being

When we arrive into this world, we are born into our natural state of being;  Happiness.

Who has looked at a baby and thought oh they are so sweet, innocent and pure? And have the child giggle and laugh back at you as you make funny faces. What we are connecting with in that moment is a pure reflection of the inner and authentic part within ourselves. The part that is of innocence and purity. The part that has been untouched and untainted by this world.

When we are born, we arrive with no previous experiences, meanings or developed belief systems.

These are created by our parents, family, society, culture, media etc as we grow up and develop.

Needless to say, these influencing factors in our life play an important part to our upbringing.

Not only do these people provide us with the teachings and experiences of life, they install within us our core beliefs, otherwise known has our meanings or beliefs we place on ourselves and on life.

An interesting fact is, the majority of these core beliefs are developed by the age of 3.

There is a saying, "Give me a child until the age of 3, and I'll give you the adult of today".  These beliefs that were formed at this young age are carried through into our adulthood and can play a major part in the way think, act and feel in today's world. When I learned this interesting fact, I started thinking about how my childhood and environment was prior to the age of 3. I started to think about what messages I was hearing, what images I was seeing, what roles did I see playing out within my family. I then started to piece together some core beliefs I had held onto all my life and could date them back to that time.  As an example, a client of mine grew up hearing that he was not wanted by his father. He proceeded to internalise this and as a result, grew up with a core belief of "I don't deserve to be here." The next step beyond this, is that sometimes we start to act out these core beliefs. This client was rebellious at times and would place himself within dangerous situations that would physically challenge his life.  It was not done on a conscious level, but the subconscious  mind always plays a large role within our lives, especially when it comes to our core beliefs.

So how do core beliefs work?

Imagine drawing a small circle in the centre of a page. Let's label this circle your authentic self.

Now if, in your environment growing up, your father or your mother beat you up, you may have developed a belief that you were unloved.

So draw a circle around your authentic self and label this 'unloved'.

You may have spoken up about your feelings and told your parents you didn't like how you were being treated.

If they didn't listen to you, you may have established a belief of 'I am not heard'.

So again, draw a circle around the two other circles and label this circle 'I am not heard'.

Already you can see a pattern emerging.

What meanings did you take out of the experiences so far? It may have been I'm not okay, or I'm not lovable.

So draw another circle and label this one 'I'm not okay'.

From here, we may have learned that I'm not loved in life. I'm not heard and therefore I feel that I'm not okay in this world.

We start to block some of these feelings and emotions out.

Draw another circle around the outside and label this one 'blocks'.

From those blocks you may go into denial and forget about such incidences.

Again, draw a circle around the others and label this one denial or the unknown.

You are now starting to see how core beliefs work. They are made up of an accumulation of events or incidences within our lives.

From there, we develop meanings, beliefs or perceptions. Some of these may be conscious and others may be unconscious.

The important thing to note and be aware of is these core beliefs are playing out in our current lives.

Some may be serving a purpose, others may not be.

It's also important to note that not all core beliefs are negative. All of the positive messages are also included within these circles. For example, I am loved and accepted in life. I am worthy of being heard. I am safe in this world. Sometimes it is about choosing what messages we listen to.  Have you seen on T.V programmes a person with a Devil on one shoulder and a Angel on the other? The Angel speaks the positive messages and the Devil speaks the negative ones. How many of you have been in this situation before? Sometimes it can feel like an internal argument and other times it can be easy to turn down the volume of the negative voice. In Life Coaching, we have many tools to be able to help a person focus on those positive comments and turn the volume down on the negative ones.

It is also about shining some light onto the situation and identifying why those voices exist. Where did they come from? What purpose do they serve? What gifts, strengths and lessons do they offer us? Debbie Ford talks about our shadow self and being able to embrace and love ALL aspects of ourselves. To be able to shine light on these core beliefs, or those negative voices can bring new insights, awareness and wisdom to our lives. They allow us the opportunity to grow and expand.

So, how do we get back to our natural state of being?

In order to get back to our natural state of being 'happiness' it is necessary that we start to define what our experiences

Have been in life and what core beliefs exist as a result of these.

It's like peeling back the layers of an onion so to speak. You have to peel back the layers to get down to the core.

This is where Life Coaching can help a person. We have been specially trained in being able to take a person through this exact process.

Identifying what are the limiting belief patterns that could be holding you back in life. What thought patterns or behaviours are currently playing out in your life.  Are they serving a purpose or are they not? Are there any sabotaging patterns going on? Are you happy in life? If not, how could you change it and if yes, how could you improve it?

Life Coaching for me, is about teaching  you how to connect back into your natural state of being. It's about finding your authentic self and connecting with who you really are. Your vision, your goals and your dreams. Its about living your life to it's full potential.

Living consciously and abundantly within every waking moment. It is also taking the strengths and awareness's you currently have and applying them into your every day living.

Think about these four steps:

  1. Where are you currently in your life?
  2. Where would you like to be in your life?
  3. What are the blocks stopping you from obtaining that?
  4. How can you eliminate those blocks and live that life you want?

This is only one of the processes a Life Coach can assist you with. If you have any further questions or want to know more about core beliefs, please leave a comment or visit our website at www.lifecoachassociates.co.nz
